Super Hero Day - In Memory of Thomas

In memory of our friend Thomas, we are holding a Super Hero Day to raise money for Westmead Children's Hospital this Monday, 28 October 2019.

Students are encouraged to wear either a Super Hero Costume or appropriate mufti clothing with a cape and / or mask. Students should not bring any toy weapons as part of their costume.

A donation will be collected on arrival at school on the morning of the Super Hero Day to go towards the support of Westmead Children's Hospital.

Kindergarten Orientation

Orientation was a time of great excitement for our Kindergarten and Prep children this week when they joined together to share learning and fun activities. Students experienced a typical morning in a Kindergarten classroom as teachers introduced them to several activities they will undertake next year as they progress to this next stage of formal schooling. New friendships were formed, confidence was gained and an enjoyable time was had by all.

Message from Year 6 Students

Year 6 are currently preparing for our Year 6 PYP Exhibition. One of the groups is conducting an inquiry into drought, and how behaviour sustains or depletes water resources. On what was an ordinary trip to Woolworths for one of our group members, they noticed a promotion for assisting drought relief, which sparked a desire for immediate action.

We have the biggest opportunity to help our farmers who are struggling in one of the worst droughts in NSW history. Woolworths Supermarkets, are going to match every $2 we spend on a Discovery Garden Sunflower Kit. The money raised will go to their drought relief partners The Salvation Army, Rural Aid, Lifeline and Foodbank. It will help rural communities impacted by the drought with household assistance, on-farm needs, mental health counselling and food relief.

So why don’t we, as St. Peter’s Anglican Primary School, take action and make a BIG difference?

Take a photo of yourself with your Sunflower Kit, send it to administration@stpeters.nsw.edu.au. We will put a collage of photos on our Social Media pages next term.

Year 4 Camp

Year 4 camp was brilliant! As soon as we arrived at Lake Macquarie we bundled up into small gazebos and started our first mission where groups ran into different directions to find their desired markers. Soon after that BABOONS ATTACKED (not really - but it was a new mission) so we ran stealthily towards the rope bridge where we moved across the canyon on a toboggan. Then we had to bundle up in groups of four to move across the lava without touching the stringy banana. Then we made our way through stringy banana lasers and succeeded in deactivating the banana bomb. Then we made our way up the perilous rock climbing wall. It was easier coming down then up. Then night fell and an inspector needed our help finding the head spy.

The next morning we woke up to beautiful sunlight and made our way down to the lake where we set off on sailing boats across the clear, warm lake. We dipped our hands into the water as we went by and we all learnt how to flip the jib. We went to a fancy auction [not] because we needed to escape Baboons again by making our own rafts and then the wind got too crazy so we headed back to our cabins.

The next morning we went back down to the lake to finish off the water activities. We had canoeing and it was extremely difficult. We remembered God through songs and then the children of Year 4 set off homeward. The leaders waved us off and we all knew we would miss their enthusiasm.

IPSHA Debating

On Thursday, 17 October, sixteen Year 5 and 6 students attended the IPSHA Debating Gala Day held at Macarthur Anglican School. The range of schools across Sydney and the South Coast areas joined in the day to argue two topics 'That students should write reports on teachers’ and ‘That school sport should be optional’.

The first topic saw us argue the negative against Norwest Christian College and the affirmative against Nowra Anglican College. Well done to Surjin, Peter, Harley and Evelyn of the negative team and Sarah, Louise, Alexander and Aryan of the affirmative team for their quality debating and rebuttals.

We also fielded an affirmative and negative team for the second topic. Well done to Madeleine, Bella, Tashvi and Brianna of the negative team who won against Norwest Christian College. Well done to Blessing, Brooke, Erin and Patrick of the affirmative team who presented their arguments strongly against Macarthur Anglican School.

Thank you to all our students who attended debating workshops during Term 3 and the dedication demonstrated by the IPSHA competitors. Congratulations on being fine representatives of our school.

School Travel

Applications for student travel in 2020 opened on Friday, 11 October 2019.

Students progressing to Year 3 and Year 7 no longer need to re-apply if they:

· are continuing at the same school

· are residing at the same address

· have not been sent an expiry notification from Transport for NSW.

Where a student meets the new distance eligibility, the system will automatically update their entitlement. If they do not meet the new eligibility, they will receive an expiry notification via email.

Students who have an entitlement approved under a medical condition which is due to expire will receive a notification advising them to re-apply.

For students currently travelling on a School Opal card under the SSTS, there is no change. Students will still be able to tap on and off to travel on any mode of transport to get to or from school or college.

Last Wednesday saw the beginning of our Year 1 and 2 Swim School for 2019.  Students were so excited to travel to the Gordon Fetterplace Aquatic Centre with their classes for their first session.  For some students this was their very first swimming lesson, while for others, it was an opportunity to improve their skills.  Over the next few weeks, students will continue to work on swimming skills as well as undertake education in water safety in readiness for summer.
Parents of students in Year 1 and 2 are invited to attend their final session on Wednesday, 13 November 2019.

Thanks For Your Feedback

It has been encouraging to read through the responses to our Family Satisfaction Survey in recent weeks. The Executive spent time considering the comments and the Schools' Council were provided with the data and comments for consideration.

Overall, the school has a significant satisfaction rating amongst parents. 83.3% of respondents are either satisfied or extremely satisfied with our school. This is an increase from 2017 (our last Satisfaction Survey) and as a school we are delighted to receive such positive feedback.

Of course not all of the feedback was like this, with some valid and timely suggestions, comments and questions raised.
It was encouraging to see many suggestions made for ways of improving our school. A canteen, extensions to OSHC, Introduction of languages, arts, support for transport options. We even had requests to commence a high school.

Whilst not all suggestions are able to be implemented, the school will continue to explore many of these suggestions as they align with our strategic plan and goals to provide quality Christian education to our students.

We always welcome your feedback and suggestions and you don't need to wait for a Satisfaction Survey to let us know the things we are doing well, the things we could be doing better, or to ask if something can be considered.

As appropriate, I will continue to unpack aspects of this survey for you in the coming weeks.
