Morning Arrival

Mrs Michelle McDonnell - Principal
Please be reminded that students from Pre-Kindergarten - Year 6 should not be left at the front of the school prior to 8.00am in the morning.  As there is no supervision until the gates open at 8.10am, all Preparatory School students must attend OSHC if being dropped at school before this time.

Uniform Matters

Please ensure that when you purchase second hand uniforms, that these are re-labelled with your child's name. We have a number of jumpers and jackets in Lost Property labelled with the name of a former student.  Items of clothing are returned to students via their class teacher if they are labelled.

As the weather has become much colder, it is important that students have their jumper or cardigan at school every day, as this is worn for warmth during the school day.  Girls may wear school grey stockings and boys may wear long grey pants which are available from the School Shop. Stocks of school tracksuit pants have now arrived and are available to purchase.
Please note, long skins / tights may not be worn by students under sports shorts or boys grey shorts.

Rungs of Restoration

It was a great privilege to engage with members of the St Peter’s community recently during Parent Information Sessions. Our wonderful School Counsellor Mrs Erin McKerral discussed some of the social and emotional impacts of the pandemic and offered insights into supporting the wellbeing of young people in the midst of the ‘new normal’.

This session was also a great opportunity to share some of the wellbeing initiatives implemented at St Peter’s throughout Semester 1. From the commencement of 2022 our Dean of Wellbeing, Mrs Nerida Hadfield has led staff and students through a whole school approach to restorative justice. Students have become familiar with a process we call the ‘Rungs of Restoration’ to help restore relationships and resolve peer conflict.

When peer conflict arises, teachers assist in facilitating productive discussion to help students move forward in a positive manner. The first step in the Rungs of Restoration is to ‘Be  Honest.’ Students are encouraged to spend time reflecting and thinking about the truth. What happened? What was your part in the problem? How did/do you feel? What do you need to do to make it right?

Once an opportunity for self reflection has occurred, each student has the chance to ‘Be Brave’ and speak the truth by sharing their reflective thinking out loud. It has been important to build a culture where students feel safe in verbalising and owning their behaviours. This continues to be an ongoing process.

The next step towards restoration encourages students to ‘Be Forgiving.’ This step provides students with an opportunity to say they are sorry and what they are sorry for. This process also encourages students to graciously accept an apology and say they forgive when ready to do so.

For lasting, positive change to occur we understand that ongoing action is required. Students are encouraged and supported to ‘Be Kind.’ Rebuilding relationships through actions of kindness, not just for a day, but everyday through simple acts such as smiling, complimenting others, writing notes or simply allowing others to go first. Teachers can offer guidance and monitor this process as necessary.

We have seen great benefit in establishing a consistent process and language for resolving conflict and working towards restored relationships. Many classes display the ‘Rungs of Restoration’ graphic within the classroom and refer to it on a regular basis. Please feel empowered to utilise a similar approach at home if desired. Consistency and a common language across both school and home is a powerful tool.

Sport in The Middle School

Sporting opportunities provide students with a variety of different experiences that contribute to the development of competent and confident individuals. Middle school students have been involved in representing the school through Cross Country, Athletics and Ultimate Frisbee this term. These opportunities have enabled students to experience both highs and lows in terms of achievement.

Whilst we want to acknowledge students who have demonstrated significant achievement on the sporting field, it is often the failures that students learn the most from. Sport provides learning for all students on how to win and lose with grace, how to manage emotions and how to pick themselves up when things don’t go as planned.

Despite a tough season of Ultimate Frisbee in the MISA Competition, it was exciting to see Year 7 students win their first game of the season a couple of weeks ago. Whilst a win was nice to witness, it was more impressive to see students encouraging each other and working together in a team. We have and will continue to encourage students to view competition as an opportunity to build teams and encourage others and not to view it as an excuse to treat others poorly in pursuit of a win.

With the addition of another Year 7 Cohort in 2023, the number of sporting opportunities we will be able to offer will increase and so will the personal development and growth opportunities that sport and competition brings.

Woojin S (Year 3) and Alicia W (Year 6) both competed in the CIS Cross Country Championships on Wednesday, 8 June 2022 at Eastern Creek. Both of them performed admirably, with Woojin finishing 15th and Alicia finishing 10th in their respective races. They both narrowly missed out on selection for the State PSSA Championships and are to be congratulated on their fine efforts.

Well done Alicia and Woojin!
